Starbase Map & Viewing Spots
Where to go and where to watch at Starbase, Texas. Starbase sits at the end of State Highway 4 on the Boca Chica peninsula, about 20 miles east of Brownsville. Use the map and the locations below to plan your visit — and check road closures before you drive out.
Key Locations
SpaceX Starbase Build Site
The factory and high bay along State Highway 4 where Starship and Super Heavy are built. Visible from the public road — this is the 'rocket town' everyone photographs.
Orbital Launch Pad (Pad A & B)
The launch and catch towers at the end of Highway 4 by the beach. Closed to the public during testing and launches — you watch from a distance, not up close.
Boca Chica Beach
Public beach at the end of Highway 4, just past the launch site. Closed by Cameron County during launches and testing — always check road closures first.
Isla Blanca Park, South Padre Island
The most popular public launch-viewing spot — about 5 miles across the bay from the pad with a clear line of sight. Plenty of parking, restrooms, and room to set up a camera.
South Padre Island Beach Access
The wider SPI beachfront also has good northeasterly sightlines to the launch site. Arrive early on launch days — traffic onto the island backs up fast.
Brownsville / SPI International Airport
Nearest airport (BRO), about a 30–40 minute drive from Starbase. Brownsville is also where most visitors find hotels, food, and gas before heading out.
Getting Around Starbase — FAQ
Where is the best place to watch a Starship launch?
Isla Blanca Park on the south end of South Padre Island is the most popular public viewing spot — it's about 5 miles across the bay from the launch pad with a clear line of sight, parking, and restrooms. The South Padre Island beachfront and the area along Highway 4 (when open) are alternatives. You cannot watch from the launch pad itself; the area is closed during launches.
How far is Starbase from South Padre Island?
Starbase and South Padre Island are only about 5 miles apart across the Brazos Santiago Pass, but there's no bridge between them — by road it's roughly a 45–60 minute drive (about 25 miles) back through Brownsville and up SH-48. That's why most launch viewers watch from South Padre Island rather than trying to reach Boca Chica.
Can you drive to the SpaceX launch site?
You can drive State Highway 4 past the Starbase build site and out to Boca Chica Beach when the road is open, and view the rockets from the public road. However, the launch pad and surrounding land are private and closed, and Cameron County closes Highway 4 and the beach entirely during testing and launches. Always check road closures before driving out.
How close can you get to Starbase?
When Highway 4 is open you can drive right past the build site and stop along the public road to see the rockets up close. During launches and most testing the road is closed at a checkpoint, so the closest public viewing is from across the water on South Padre Island.
