Flight 14 Made Orbit the Hard Way
Issue 1 / October 15, 2026
The day before Flight 14, an AP photographer caught a man named David Orr riding his bike past the rocket as crews readied it for launch. It is the kind of picture you only get down here: a bicycle, a quiet road, and a ship about to try for orbit.
On Monday, September 28, it nearly didn't get there. One of the ship's six engines shut down about 30 seconds early on the climb, and the team first planned to skip the burn into orbit. Then engineers worked out that the engine they needed for that burn, and for the later one to bring the ship down, was separate from the one that failed. After several tense minutes, Mission Control announced "Starship is orbital." SpaceX employees at the launch cheered loudly.
It was the first Starship to reach orbit and the first to put real satellites there. All 26 Starlink V3 satellites went out, and SpaceX says it made contact with every one of them. ABC News reported it was also the first Starship mission to make money for SpaceX. After years of stand-in satellites, call it a first paycheck.
The plan had been six laps around Earth. Out of caution over the engine, the team cut the trip short and made Starship's first-ever burn out of orbit, about three hours after liftoff. The ship came down on target north of Hawaii. The booster splashed down in the Gulf as planned, though two engines did not relight on each burn.
Flight 15 is next, and SpaceX has not set a date. That leaves November to the rest of us: cooler air, boats heading offshore, and birds and monarchs passing through. Not a bad month to wait in.

Fall in and around Starbase
Between now and the end of November, here are five worth planning around.

Oct 16 · South Padre Island
Blind Fest 2026
Now in its third year, it brings blind and visually impaired guests, their families, and friends together for a weekend of accessible recreation, sports, and arts.

Oct 25 · South Padre Island Birding
Hallowings: A Monarch Migration Celebration
Free admission for the day at the birding center, a run of activities, and a good excuse to watch for monarchs on their way south.

Nov 6 · Queen Gallery
First Friday Art Walk
Pick up a map and walk an evening between the 7–10 places showing art on the island.

Nov 6–7 · The Livivo Music Hall
Brownsville Latin Music Festival
Worth the drive inland: two nights of Latin music and live dancing, with Ache de Barrio on Friday and Del Castillo on Saturday.

Nov 14 · Isla Blanca Park
South Padre Island Half Marathon Weekend
A 1-mile run and a 5K on Saturday, then the half marathon on Sunday, so everyone in the car can find a distance.
Starbase tips
Before You Come Down
- 1Pick your launch spot before there is a date →
Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island sits about 5 miles across the water from the pad and costs $15 per vehicle. One bridge serves the island, so plan to leave 4 hours early.
- 2Check closures before you drive to Boca Chica →
Boca Chica Beach and State Highway 4 close on launch day. The City of Starbase publishes the closures, and our page carries the live schedule.
- 3Read the forecast and pack for a long wait →
Check the weather the day before and fill the tank. Bring water and food, shade, ear protection, a folding chair, and binoculars. The sound takes more than 20 seconds to cross 5 miles, so keep the earplugs handy after you see the light.
Starbase Supply

The Starbase TX camo hat keeps the sun off while you wait for SpaceX to name a date. It blends in with nothing on the beach, which is half the fun.
Shop the hat →Thanks for reading, and for sticking with a rocket schedule that moves more than the tides. We'll be in touch when Flight 15 has a date.
