Where to Watch a Starship Launch

Watch from Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island, about 5 miles across the water from the launch pad. Boca Chica Beach and State Highway 4 close on launch day. Leave 4 hours early: one bridge serves the island.

Step 1: Pick a Spot

Straight-line miles to the launch pad. Rocket Ranch’s 3.7 miles is its own figure for its viewing site.

North is up. The beach beside the pad closes on launch day, so every spot is across the bay.

Step 2: Time the Drive

  1. The day before

Read the road closures and the weather. Fill the tank. Pack water, shade, and ear protection.

  2. 4 hours before

Leave for your spot. The Queen Isabella Causeway is the only road onto South Padre Island. For Flight 14, Isla Blanca Park opened at 3 a.m.

  3. 2 hours before

Park and set up. From Isla Blanca Park, the pad is due south.

  4. Liftoff

You see the light first. The sound takes more than 20 seconds to cross 5 miles.

  5. After

Wait. Everyone leaves at the same time, and the bridge is slow.

You wait for hours, and a launch can slip. Bring what you need for the whole day.

Where to Stay

  • South Padre Island

Closest to Isla Blanca Park, on the island side of the bridge.

  • Port Isabel

On the mainland side of the bridge, for a quicker exit after the launch.

  • Brownsville

The most hotels, and the airport. The drive to the island crosses the same bridge.
